What is SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth)?
Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, or SIBO, means there are too many bacteria in the small intestine, a part of the gut that normally hosts very few. The overgrown bacteria ferment food before you can absorb it, which is why SIBO so often shows up as bloating, gas, constipation or diarrhea, abdominal pain and nutrient deficiencies. Research suggests that up to 72% of people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) also have SIBO.
Who is the SIBO test for?
This test is for anyone with persistent bloating, gas, irregular bowel habits or abdominal pain, and for people with conditions in which SIBO is common: IBS, Crohn's disease, celiac disease, ulcerative colitis, food sensitivities, unexplained nutrient deficiencies, eczema, joint pain and autoimmune disease.
How the at-home SIBO breath test works
You drink a sugar solution and then collect breath samples every 20 minutes for three hours. Bacteria in the small intestine ferment the sugar and produce hydrogen and/or methane, which are absorbed into the blood and exhaled. The laboratory measures both gases in each sample and maps how they rise over time.
The SIBO pathway: bacterial overgrowth -> hydrogen gas -> archaeal overgrowth -> methane gas
